About Cheshire Walkers

Who are we?

Formed in 1999, and originally a 20s-30s group, we are a walking group affiliated to the Ramblers and part of the North & Mid Cheshire Area. As time has moved on, we have dropped the age restriction and anybody is welcome to walk with us. In practice, most of the regulars in the group are 40s-50s.

We are based in Cheshire, and have about 125 members throughout Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire.

What do we do?

We organise a range of walks from short gentle rambles to longer mountain climbs that could include some scrambling and so there should be something to suit all abilities. The walks are mostly in Cheshire, Lancashire, the Peak District and Lake District, North Wales and the Yorkshire Dales. They are mostly on Sundays with some on Saturdays and the occasional mid week short evening walk in the summer.

We also have social events on a regular basis - these are organised by the members and advertised on walks or by email.

We organise weekends away at regular intervals through the year. We normally book places in a youth hostel, but try to organise them so that alternative such as B&Bs and campsites are available for those who want more or less comfort! The locations for our weekends away include the Lake District, Scotland , North Yorkshire North Wales and further afield.

If you would like to walk mid week all year round please note some of the other groups in the North & Mid Cheshire Area do organise mid week walks on a regular basis.

Some of our members are also keen photographers. Here is a link to Joe's portfolio of Cheshire Walkers walks.

What if I don't have a car or am unhappy driving to a remote start point on my own?

As we cover such a wide geographic area, it's often not practical for the group to organise car-sharing/pick-up points. However, some amount of car-sharing does go on, and is often arranged informally on an ad-hoc basis by people coming from the same area. You should speak to the walk leader, who may know of people who are coming from the same area as you and may be able to put you in touch (no guarantees!) You could also try asking on the group's Facebook page or on the message board. In addition, we occasionally have walks that are accessible by public transport.

Please note some of the other groups in the North & Mid Cheshire Area arrange coach travel for their walks.

Can I bring my dog?

If you wish to bring a dog along you should always check with the leader of each individual walk to confirm if it would be possible, as circumstances are often different each week.

All dog owners should be aware that they may be required to have their dog on a lead at all times during a walk.

Come and try us out!

You are welcome to come along for 2 or 3 walks before joining. Any thoughts about these initial walks would be very welcome, the feedback form can be used to provide comments about our walks or programme.

Membership of the group is by joining the Ramblers (click here for more information).

After a few walks you can be added to our email list by completing this form or emailing a commitee member.

Helping the group

The group is run by a committee of at least six people, elected at our AGM every November. For details of the present committee have a look at the contacts page.

We also have two meetings a year to organise our walks programme and the members who lead walks and arrange social events are also volunteers. If you want to get involved please contact a committee member.

Minutes

Minutes of the meetings are available on request from a committee member.

Mailing list

We send regular emails to the group regarding walks, socials, weekends away and other planned events.
