Cheshire Walkers have the following control measures in place in relation to the identified COVID-19 hazard.

  • Remind walkers beforehand about the guidelines.
  • Advise walkers at the start of the walk to maintain physical distancing, and what to do at any pinch points or road crossings – this is everyone’s responsibility.
  • Ensure a record of who attended the walk is available for 21 days from the date of the walk for contact tracing.
  • Suggest walkers bring hand sanitiser.

 

The following typical further hazards have been identified and these are controlled as follows:

Bad weather
(including extreme temperatures)

Check the weather forecast and postpone/cancel if necessary. Advise walkers to bring suitable clothing and items for the conditions.

Busy roads

Avoid routes along busy roads and/or check for suitable crossing places on the recce.

Steep, slippery or muddy sections.

Check for muddy/slippery sections on the recce and adapt the route if necessary. Advise walkers to bring suitable footwear for the conditions.

Livestock

Cross fields with livestock calmly and quietly, keeping the group together. Be prepared to divert around livestock if necessary.

Cliffs or sheer drops

Check paths are suitable for a group to use safely and make changes if necessary. Follow any local warnings or signs, and advise walkers to keep away from the edge.

Risk of property damage or livestock escape

Follow the Countryside Code (England & Wales). Leave gates and property as you find them.

Walk number makes the group difficult to manage

A back marker will be in place for any walks with more than 15 walkers. In addition there will be adequate car parking in place at the start point to accommodate the likely number of walkers’ vehicles.
